One of the most iconic figures in Virginia Beach is King Neptune. A visit to the beach is not complete without snapping a pic of the Ruler of the Ocean. King Neptune can be found on 31st St on the boardwalk at the Virginia Beach Oceanfront overlooking Neptune's Park. The massive statue stands 34 feet high and weighs 12 tons. On the 12 foot tall rock base, you can find fish, dolphins, and octopuses. As King Neptune rests his left hand on a loggerhead turtle, he grips a trident. Production for the King Neptune statue started in 2003 for the annual Neptune Festival. Sculptors around the world submitted their designs for a King Neptune statue. Paul DiPasquale from Richmond, VA was chosen as the winner. Construction on the massive statue was an undertaking and it was finally completed on a couple years later. On September 20, 2005 the King Neptune we are all familiar with was finally unveiled.
